Make Plans to Join Us

In Remembrance of The Day of Emancipation in the state of Tennessee, August 8, 1863, the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, announces its Eighth Annual Eighth of August Commemorative events beginning on Friday August 5 through Monday, August 8

and all are invited.

THE FESTIVAL

The Festival, part of the Annual Eighth of August Jubilee, includes entertainment, food, vendors, games, line-dancing, and a good ole fashion party on the lawn. The Festival was held at Chilhowee Park for several years. Today, the Jubilee Festival is hosted in the community. Lawn chairs, blankets and tents make it a day of fun, friendship and fellowship. The Festival is held on Saturday during the week of the Eighth of August Jubilee events.

THE FESTIVAL TRADITION

The Festival is rooted in a tradition that dates back to 1871 in Greeneville, Tennessee. Sam Johnson, emancipated on August 8,1863, was successful in having August 8 set aside for Emancipation Day observances and celebrations. In the early history, these celebrations included: beauty contests, baseball games, speakers, dancing and jubilee.

Today, the Jubilee includes the Libation, the Red-Carpet and the Festival. The Festival has included entertainment artists such as: 2017 Voice Winner Chris Blue, JazzSpirations with Brian Clay, Grammy Nominated Alvin Garret, Motown Sounds with Evelyn Jack and the Band (Lloyd Jones – Vocals, Brandon Whitaker – Keys, AP Hardaway – Bass, Bob Knaap – Sax, PeeJay Alexander – Trumpet, Frankie Sheadrick – Drums, Richard Gallaher, Jr. – Guitar), Loc Barz, Spanky Brown, David Benton, Starr Jacqui, and others.

We continue the tradition of celebrating August 8, the day of freedom.
